 Key terms Independent company A company that is not part of the big 6 Conglomerate When a mega company owns other subsidaries, that they use when creating different products. An example of this is Disney. They are both horizontally and vertically integrated.  Joint ventures When 2 or more independent companies work together and pull their resources to create a product The Big 6 Major Hollywood film studios that have a high budget, compared to independent films.

Mini test Ownership Conglomerates- a large company that owns other subsidiaries, smaller companies. For example, Disney owns Pixar.  Vertical integration- the company covers all areas or stages. For example, production, distribution and exhibition. For example, Netflix. It makes the product and distributes it on it's own platforms.  An advantage of this is that the profit that is made is not shared, and the company can keep it all.  Horizontal integration-     a media company has a number of   subsidiary   (smaller) companies that are used to support the marketing of its products. Independent Film Independent film An independent film is one made outside of the Hollywood studio system.  The major Hollywood film studios are often referred to as 'The Big Six'. These command a significant market share, and the budgets tend to be much bigger than those of an independent film. The Big Six are: Paramount Warner brothers 20th Century Fox Universal Columbia Walt Disney Bait   An independent UK film, released in August 2019. Film The production process There are 3 distinct stages of production Pre production Hiring staff Casting the characters Creating pre production documents- Mood boards, storyboards etc.  Writing the script Production Filming  Sound Post production Editing Distribution and Marketing  Pre production After the development stage, and a project is greenlit pre-production begins Financing will be confirmed Principal cast members, director and cinematographer are set The screenplay is finalised The script is broken down into individual scenes and storyboarded Locations, props, cast members, costumes, special effects and visual effects are identified An extremely detailed schedule is produced Sets are constructed The crew is hired Financial arrangements are put in place and a start date for the beginning of principal photography on set. Film Advertising  Disney is a conglomerate One overall parent company that owns a number of smaller, subsidiary companies, they have creative control over the production process.   Pixar is a subsidiary of Disney Video on demand Nowadays, companies can also exhibit their films via online video on demand services such as Netflix and Amazon prime.  Disney owns the Disney channel (TV) but also Disney life, a VoD, allowing it to compete with the likes of Netflix.  Cinema and Marketing  How have you ended up at the cinema? Interview Broadly, research can be divided into two categories: Primary research Secondary research Qualitative Typically descriptive, in depth data used to find out how people think about a given product. Questions that allow people to write extended responses. This type of data can be used to answer open-ended questions.  Quantitative Data that can be measured numerically (e.g. the number of people who watch a given television show). Closed questions, typically in the yes/no tick-this-box form of response.
