Magazines and Newspapers- exam question

Explain what the term readership means (2)

Readership is the total number of people who read a publication.

Analysing data about 'The Sun' and 'The Daily Mail' newspapers, describe 2 differences in terms of their target audiences (4)

'The Daily Mail' has a higher percentage of consumers that belong to an ABC1 social class with 8.2% being of this group compared to only 5.9% of readers from 'The Sun'.

Another difference in terms of these newspapers target audience is that 'The Sun' is read by more young people in the 15-34 category.

From your knowledge on demographics describe and justify the type of content that might feature in four newspapers of your choice from the data provided (8)

The Sun

Content and justification- The Sun may use more colloquial language within their articles. This is because it appeals to a C2DE social class as they will be able to access the language used.

The Guardian

Content and Justification- The Guardian is a Berlinger. The content is very cultured and political, and so will target a traditional, older, white-British audience.

The Daily Mail

Content and justification- The Daily Mail is likely to target men, this is because it conforms to the ‘Male Gaze’. This is reflected within the content as the images usually sexualise women. As this magazine is picture-heavy, it emphasises this view.

The Independent

Content and justification- The Independent is more likely to feature news on the current affairs. This is because it targets an older audience, and they are typically more attracted to politics.
