Mainstream

  • An audience that consumes a product that appeals to a wide range of groups and cultures.
Niche
  • The audience of a specialist interest in media product that may only appeal to a small number of people or those who fall within a specific demographic profile.
  • E.g. Age, Ethnicity, Class
BARB data
  • BARB stands for Broadcasters Audience Research Board.
  • They collate viewing figures of all of the major UK broadcasters such as BBC, ITV and Sky.
  • Splits up the gender, age, class and what device they are watching it on.
  • This is significant to tell those how successful a product is.
  • They can find ways to improve less successful products.
  • They can identify who their primary audience is and target their product to them through ways such as advertising.
  • BARB data can then be used by television companies to assess how well a television series is performing, compared with previous series, for example, or with rival shows on other channels.

Doctor Who average ratings 2005-2017
In season 4, The episode of doctor who featuring David Tennant in 2008 was the most popular and had 8 million viewers
From 2008-2017 the show became progressively less popular. Season 10 only had 5.5 million viewers.
One of the reasons the shows popularity may have decreased in the last 10 years or so is because there has been an increase in choice and streaming options for viewers.

  • Increased a drastic amount when England plays as the data is on how many people in the UK watched it. They are more likely to watch the England game as it represents their country and so they will have a particular interest in it.
  • Volume of increase decreases, however, the amount of people who watched it does not increase.
Box set viewing

  • This smaller percentage that watched season 1 on a tablet or PC may be due to it being mainly watched on live TV, as tablets and PCs may not has been as popular.
  • The drastic increase by over 30% by Season 6 could be due to the increased demand of tablets due to the fact you can download episodes and watch them outside of the house. For example, on the train on the way to work.

Viewing by age group
  • From this graph we can infer that the higher the age group, the increase in average minutes viewed per day.
  • In some age groups, there is a significant difference between 2020 and 2021. This could be due to society increasingly becoming more dependant on technological advances such as television.
  • Old people are usually retired and so have the time to watch TV. This can explain why they are the group with the highest average minutes viewed per day.
  • 4-15 year olds are likely to require permission to watch TV, and may not have much time due to school, and homework. This can explain why they are the lowest group regarding average minutes viewed per day.
  • Only decease in average minutes viewed per day with a years span is the ages 16-24. This could be due to them using different devices. For example, smartphones, PC's or video game consoles etc.
