Impact of online distribution
- Music and television can now be downloaded, streamed or simulcasted at the click of a button, without even needing to leave your armchair.
- It is available to you whenever, wherever
Simulcasting
- When a media product is broadcast both online and via a traditional medium at the same time.
- In television terms it could refer to programmes being broadcasted on 2 different channels.
- An example of this is the French tennis tournament.
When looking at how much Block bluster and Netflix made each year I found:
- In 2004 Blockbuster made £6 billion, compared to Netflix who made around £500 million. In 2010 Blockbuster went bankrupt and Netflix has made £2.2 billion.
Case study: Love Film by post- a UK based-provider of DVD by mail and streaming video on demand.
- Acquired by Amazon in 2011, the service had reached 2 million subscribers.
- It also claimed over 70,000 titles and over 4 million DVD, Blue Ray or game rentals per month in 5 countries.
- Love Film quickly became the leading online DVD rental and streaming outket in the UK and Europe.
- The company offered a download service alongside postal delivery but this ceased at the beginning of 2009.
- The company had started a watch online service which offers thousands of films to watch as part of a subscription.
- In 2017, Amazon announced that Love Film by post service would end due to a 'decreasing demand' for discs.
Narrowcast channels
- Television channels that distribute niche (special interest) content.
- For example BBC 4, as it shows lots of foreign dramas.
Below the line advertising
- The distribution of pamphlets, stickers, promotion etc. at the point of sale.
- An incentive after purchasing something.
- For example, a promotion code.
A television channel with sister channels- BBC: BBC2, BBC4, BBC News, BBC Sports
- BBC 2 is a sister channel to BBC that distributes niche content. For example, the RHS Chelsea flower show will target those who appreciate gardening and nature.
- These sister channels are advertised above the line as it is seen as mass communication. It is being advertised on the main/mother channel that targets a mass audience, and so can reach a specific audience who enjoy the niche content being advertised.
Time shifting
- The recording of programming to a storage medium to be viewed or listened to after the live broadcasting.
- Examples are, ITV+1, Channel+1.
Good inclusion of key words!
ReplyDeletePlease respond below: Why do you think media companies use both above and below the line advertising to promote their products?
Miss C
Media companies use both above and below the line advertising as while above the line advertising creates awareness amongst the mass audience, below the line advertising is used to create awareness amongst their target audience, which will be more niche.
